Pearl millet gluten free flat bread, a perfect recipe for nursing moms

My sister is blessed with a baby boy. With the bundle of joy, there comes huge responsibilities. Mother's diet is the most important to be taken care of. In India light and nutritious diet is given to nursing moms. Because babies mental & physical growth both depend on the intake of mom's diet.

Bajra is one of the oldest millet used by our ancestors. It's not a very expensive millet and has many health benefits.

With bajra flour you can make
  1. Bajra Roti-It's a flat bread made with wheat flour & pearl millet flour 
  2. Bajra Rotla-Smoked flavored flat bread served with dollops of ghee
  3. Bajra Puri-Puffed flat bread
  4. Vagherelo Rotlo-Leftover bajra roti tempered with Indian spices
Benefits of Bajra/Pearl Millet
  1. Bajra is very easy to digest hence given to nursing mom's
  2. It's a gluten free millet
  3. It is rich in fiber content
  4. It helps in loosing weight
  5. It controls blood sugar levels and hence good for diabetis.
Tips for making bajra puri
  1. For making puri the dough has to be kneaded very well
  2. If you use old bajra flour to prepare any bajra flour dish, the dish will taste bitter 
  3. It is always recommended to prepare bajra flour dishes in winters
  4. To make puri flavorful i have added black pepper powder. But you can add fresh green fenugreek leaves(methi) and garlic, it tastes awesome
  5. I have deep fried the puri's in oil, but many in houses ghee is given to nursing mom's. So you can deep fry them in ghee also

So lets proceed step by step for making bajra puri


In a bowl take bajra flour and salt, pepper powder, turmeric powder, cooking oil & red chilli powder to it

Add water slowly and knead it to a soft dough 

Take a lemon size portion of the dough. Now place it between your palms and flatten the ball by pressing it gently

Continue patting the dough until you have attained round shape for puri. The flat puri shape shouldn't be too thick or too thin.

If you find any cracks, use your finger to pinch the cracks together and seal them.

Heat oil in a thick bottom vessel for deep frying

Now slowly add the puri's in hot oil and cook them on a low flame till they are puffed up from both sides and light brown in color.

Bajra Puri is ready. Serve it with hot ginger masala tea.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Bajra Flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon Black Pepper Powder

  • Salt to Taste
