Recipe Of Sabudana Khichdi | How To Make Sabudana Khichdi

Unknown | Tuesday, April 08, 2014 | |
Sabudana Khichdi is a very famous dish made during Upvas (Fast) and Vrat in India. It is a very popular dish in Maharashtra and served during breakfast. However in Gujarat we make Sabudana Khichdi for Dinner during fasting occasions like Ramnavami, Shivratri or Janmashtami.  I have learned this particular recipe from my mother in law who is a great cook. It is a slight variation of the Maharashtra version. I have also written the recipe of Maharashtrian style Sabudana Khichdi below. When I was pregnant I use to crave for this dish and my mother in law used to happily make this for me :). So lets proceed step by step.
To make Sabudana Khichdi wash the Sabudana(sago) properly and soak it over night so they become soft and tender. Minimum of 4-5 hours soaking of Sabudana is required.

Cut about 2-3 potatoes in small cubes.

Heat some oil in a pan and add Cumin seeds. After the seeds crackle add the cut potatoes.  Add a little salt and allow the potatoes to cook for about 15 minutes on low flame by covering the pan. You can also add a little water to cook faster and prevent the potatoes from burning. Alternative you can also boil the potatoes in microwave and add them to the pan. My mother in law generally prefers to cook the potatoes inside the pan while frying. This keeps the dish more tasty and crispy.

After the potatoes are cooked add all the spices like red chilli powder, turmeric powder and some finely chopped ginger and green chillies. Add little more salt to taste. Many people who fast don't add turmeric powder to their Vrat food so its optional.

Mix all the ingredients well and cook till the potatoes become tender. Add some sugar and lemon juice

Now add the Sabudana and mix well

Sabudana Khichdi is ready

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
