Diwali, the festival of lights is here. Although in India we celebrate all festivals with same joy and enthusiasm Diwali excites me the most. I like everything about it. From cleaning and decorating the house, making rangoli, lighting diyas, and of course wearing new clothes. There is always some warmth that I felt about this festival. When everything is in full glow all around. Just like everyone my family is also getting ready for the auspicious festival. Diwali brings lots of love, togetherness, laughter and cheers. Like each year this time also I have made wheat flour diyas. Many of you living abroad might not find diyas available. But these wheat flour diyas can be easily made at home. So lets proceed step by step.
Note: As you know kneaded wheat flour gets spoilt on the next day. Same is with wheat flour diyas so always make diyas on the same day you are going to use it
We just require 1 ingredient to make the wheat flour diyas.
Just add enough water to knead it to a soft dough.
Knead a dough like we make for chapati/rotis and keep aside to rest for 15-20 minutes.
Now divide the dough into 5 equal portions.
Now roll it in a cylinder shape with the help of palms as shown in picture.
Now with your finger make a hole in the between. Make the hole deep enough because we have to add oil to light the diyas.
Now pinch out some dough from top. To make like a diya shape.
I have made 5 diyas you can make according to your requirement.
You can just use the diyas as it is or can decorate according to your ideas. You can even decorate them with food grains.
I have used all different types of colours (water paint) for each diya. Apply some gum and stick the decoration.
Roll out some cotton and make wick, add some oil in diyas and light them.
This year for Diwali I have made Topra Pak too with homemade wheat flour diyas. Have a Happy, Sweet and Safe Diwali :).

1.You can add food colour while making dough itself. As I wanted each diya in different colour I did not add food colour while making dough.
2.You can make any shape of diya you prefer.
3.After diyas are shaped you can bake the diyas this will make the diyas firm if they are not firm. Or you can even dry them in sun for half day.
5.If you are baking diyas bake them for 20 minutes for 180 degrees.
Also, don't forget to check the recipe of Topra Pak, Tikha Gathiya , Farsi Puri popular Diwali dishes that I made this year
