Traditional gujarati dish made with dal and stuffed wheat flour dumplings
Dal dhokli is one of the most famous dish made for Sunday lunch in every gujarati household. It's a really healthy and filling dish. It is a very easy and simple meal. You might have always had dal dhokli so sharing with you a slightly different version stuffed dal dhokli.
Stuffed Dal Dhokli is made by stuffing dhokli with spicy potato filling. The dumplings are then cooked in a khatti mitthi gujarati toor dal. It can be also made with leftover toor dal. I have made the dumplings for Dal Dhokli in a traditional way. However you can change the shape slightly by giving it a shape of ravioli and stuffed with potato filling.
To share a little secret with you, stuff dal dhokli is a recipe that I learned from my mother. Her birthday is just approaching so I thought what best gift could I give her other than blogging about her trademark recipe :)
Stuffed Dal Dhokli tastes best when served hot with chopped onions, ghee and lemon juice. I also make some steamed rice with the Dal Dhokli as my husband likes it.
Tips for making stuffed dal dhokli
- Seal the dhoklis properly before adding them to dal
- Always put the dhoklis in boiling dal or else they will stick to each other
- After adding dhoklis if the dal becomes thick you can add little water for desired consistency
- You can even boil the peanuts with dal in pressure cooker and then add it to the tempered dal
- Instead of lemon juice you can add tamarind or kokum
- I have made dumplings with potato stuffing, you can also add other veggies
- You can even garnish the stuffed dal dhokli with some sev and fried peanuts
- Always add the amount of dry and fresh masala specified, otherwise the dal will be very bland
- Stuffed Dal Dhokli is slightly heavy to digest so always preferred during lunch
So lets proceed step by step for making stuffed dal dhokli
In a wide bowl sieve wheat flour and add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and oil
Knead it to a soft dough by adding water. Grease the dough with little oil and keep it aside
Rinse toor dal 3-4 times in water and soak for 30 minutes
Add the dal in pressure cooker with 1.5 cups water and cook it for 3-4 whistles
Blend the dal to a smooth puree
Boil the potatoes in pressure cooker and after they cool peel its skin. Smash the potatoes and add turmeric powder, chopped green chillies, ginger, coriander leaves, garam masala, salt and lemon juice
Mix all the ingredients together and stuffing for dhokli is ready
Take a portion of a kneaded dough and make a small puri sized flat bread
Add a tablespoon mixture in between of puri
Slowly bring the edges together to form a pouch. Make sure the pouch is sealed properly
Follow the above 2 steps to make more dhoklis till all the stuffing is used
Also sharing with you all another option of making dhokli. The above pouch method of stuffing dhokli is a traditional method. However you can stuff the dhokli in shape of ravioli also.
Take a portion of kneaded dough and make a big flat bread. Now use a small bowl and cut the flat bread into small circles as shown below in picture.
Now take a small cut circle and add some spicy potato stuffing we prepared. Seal the edges with the help of fork. Repeat the steps till all the desired dhoklis are ready.
Now for making dal, heat oil in a deep bottom pan and add mustard seeds & cumin seeds
Add the dry masalas like cinnamon, dry red chilli, cloves and curry leaves
Now add the boiled dal
Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt
Add the fresh masala like chopped tomatoes, green chillies, ginger and coriander leaves
Add the peanuts
Also add some jaggery and mix well
Bring the dal to boil
Now add the stuffed dhoklis we prepared
Cook the dhoklis with dal for 10 minutes. Stuffed Dal Dhokli is ready
Sprinkle some chopped onions and serve hot with some steamed rice.

- 1 Dry Red Chilli
- 2-3 Cloves
- 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
- 1 tablespoon chopped Ginger & Green Chilli
- 1/2 Tomato
- 2 tablespoon Peanuts
- 1 tablespoon Jaggery
- Salt to Taste For Garnishing
- 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
- 1 Onion chopped
- Ghee as Required
