Onion and tomato chutney is a very famous South Indian chutney served as a accompaniment with idli, dosa or uttapam.
As you all know I am a gujarati, so have always been brought up eating gujarati food. After marriage I lived in metro city where I made friends. I learned many great South Indian dishes like Idli and Dosa from my friend and neighbor Preetha who is from Chennai. Thanks to Preetha now South Indian dishes have become a regular menu in our routine life. Be it uttapam, dosa or idli they all taste great with Onion and Tomato Chutney.
There are many versions of making onion tomato chutney but this is how I learnt from my friend and prefer making it this way at home.
Heat oil in a non stick pan and add urid dal and asafoetida
Now add dry red chillies either cut or whole and curry leaves
Add the roughly chopped onions and sprinkle some salt. Sprinkling onions will allow them to cook faster
Cook them on low flame till they become translucent
Now add turmeric powder and red chilli powder
Mix all the ingredients well and add some chana dal
Now add roughly chopped tomatoes
Cook till the tomatoes are soft and tender
Allow the mixture to cool completely and transform it to the chutney jar
Make a fine puree
Onion tomato chutney is ready serve it with some hot idli's and green chutney. Yummy and healthy breakfast is ready!!
